Drake Springs Pool Replacement Timeline

  • January 1996—Drake Springs Pool condition assessment issued by Koch Hazard Baltzer.
  • February 2000—Management Learning Laboratories issued “Interest, Attitude, and Opinion Survey Results.”
  • 2001—Convention, Sports, and Leisure (CSL) analyzed sports and entertainment needs of Sioux Falls. Report recommended two separate facilities (expanded arena and a new recreation center).
  • May 2001—Sioux Falls Aquatics Enterprise Plan issued by Councilman Hunsaker and Associates.
  • March 2002 to February 2003—Citizen Task Force appointed by Parks and Recreation Board meets to develop proposal for multipurpose recreation facility.
  • March 2003—Recreation Center Task Force report “Summary of Recommendations” issued to the Parks and Recreation Board.
  • Early 2004—Mayor Dave Munson issued a memorandum that established a Public Facilities Task Force. This task force was comprised of 21 voting members, several volunteer advisors, and several hired consultants.
  • February 2005—Public Facility Task Force issued a fi nal report recommending immediate need for indoor facilities that will provide a variety of recreation activity for youth, individuals, families, and seniors located on the Nelson Park site.
  • December 2005—Recreation Center vote.
  • March to June 2006—Neighborhood/public input meetings held to discuss replacement of Drake Springs Pool.
  • Five public meetings were held:
    • March 2, 2006—Whittier Middle School
    • April 6, 2006—Eugene Field Elementary School
    • April 20, 2006—Oyate Community Center
    • June 13, 2006—Kuehn Community Center
    • June 15, 2006—Morningside Community Center
  • June 2006—Park Board recommended construction of indoor pool option B with the recommendation to increase the size of the lap
    pool up to an 8-lane, 50-meter pool if funding is available.
  • August 2006—City Council adopted CIP program.
  • January 2007—Park Board reaffirmed support for indoor pool option B.
